by John Gaudio Frontier Airlines now flies to Mexico, and to get the word out they've created one of the best promotions I've seen in years. Frontier has created the illusion that Flip, their spokes-dolphin, is tired of going to Chicago, and threatening to quit if he doesn't get to fly to sunny Mexico. Denver commercials include "newscasts" and "protests" bringing attention to the difficulties this is causing Frontier's management, including Joe Hodas, and Frontier's beloved CEO, Jeff Potter. Joe claims that "Sending Flip to Mexico is a logistical nightmare. Frankly, it would take a miracle." The miracle, I think, is the clever way Frontier has brought these characters to life in the first place, and then positioned themselves to be heroes when they pull off this "miracle". I can't say for certain, but it's my bet that Frontier will cave in to Flip's demands, with a smile. Flip's "contract" just happens to be up on SuperBowl Sunday, and word is that Frontier will make an announcement during the "Big Game." The commercials, which can be seen at Flip's Website, include a "Flippie" named Grace, a lovely young lady sporting her "Mexico or BUST" t-shirt, many "protesters" and much more. There's also an interview on the site, and it's worth listening to. Slogans like, "Porpoise Power", "Porpoise with a Purpose", "Let Flip FLy", and "Hey Joe, Let Flip Go" make me smile. Bottom line - Hat's off to Jeff, Joe, Flip, Griz, Jack, Larry, and the advertising wizards at Frontier Airlines. Power to the Porpoise! |
