| May 30, 2006 | | Brian Madden and Ron Ogleby explain how Windows printing works in general, and how it works for remote clients in a Terminal Server environment. | by John Gaudio When one of my clients needed to access a database in California from different locations around the country, Windows Server 2003 with Terminal Services was the asnswer. Recently that client needed to print things from the database on a local printer. This seems trivial. The documentation says it should happen automatically. In fact, it appears that sometimes it does happen automatically. I learned though that if the printer driver being used on the client computer is not either installed, or at least on the Terminal Server's built in list of drivers, the remote client's printer doesn't show up as an option. Fortunately, Google led me to a great article by Brian Madden and Ron Oglesby, co-authors of Terminal Services for Windows Server 2003:Advanced Technical Design Guide. The article is well written, and gave me several possible solutions, one of which I had up and running in a matter of hours. Thanks, Brian and Ron, for the excellent article, and the fine book. Please keep up the good work. | | |
