Directional Advertising Versus Creative Advertising

A Better Blogsite is an example of "Directional Advertising." The buyer is searching for your service or product, typically through, Google, Yahoo, MSN, or some other search engine, and finds your blogsite. The buyer is actively looking for something.

by John Gaudio

In "Creative Advertising" the seller puts out an advertisement, typically in a magazine, the paper, radio, television, or a billboard, and hopes that a buyer will happen upon that ad through a largely random encounter with that medium.

Another big difference is longevity.  Creative advertisements typically live very short lives.  Thirty seconds in radio or television.  A day to a week in a newspaper.  A week to a month in a magazine, and perhaps a little longer on a billboard.

Directional Advertising, like an ad in the Yellow Pages, tends to last much longer, typically six months to a year.  In the case of a MyST BlogsiteTM, the advertorial article, (ad) can last for as long as it's relevant.  There are posts here, at http://ABetterBlogsite.com, that I wrote more than two years ago, and people still find them today.

Finally, I''m told, that about 70% of sales are the culmination of Directional Advertising, while the remaining 30% result from Creative Advertising efforts.

Special thanks to Bart Beasley, an advertising professional who pointed some of these details out to me yesterday at breakfast.  Bart's also planning to enlighten us at EntConnect this year, March 29 - April 1.  Please check out http://EntConnect.org for details.

Take care, and remember.  Blog Early, and Blog Often.  Those buyers are out there looking for you.   Give 'em something to find. :-)

Great post

We're finding the same things

We also learned that 74% of consumers use Internet Search Engines like Google and Yahoo to find local businesses. You can learn more about this in our presentation on "How Consumers Find and Choose Local Businesses"

The bottom line is that search engines must provide "relevant" and useful content to its users in order to survive. Content on relevant websites, such as blogs, can prove to be more useful than ads that are paid to be served users.

RE: Directional Advertising Versus Creative Advertising

Internet vs. Yellow Pages
As a sales professional that worked formerly for yellow pages, and currently focusing on Internet marketing I can honestly say that "creative" advertising helps create demand, and directional advertising directs people where to buy. Directional advertising usually has higher ROI because the demand is already built in... people will always need plumbers, dentists, lawyers, auto repair etc, consumers just need to know where to spend their money.
