I was invited tonight to watch Al Gore's movie, "An Inconvenient Truth." with the Peace and Justice group at my church. It was a well crafted attempt to convince the public that we are the cause of global warming, and will be doomed if we don't fix it.

by John Gaudio

"An Inconvenient Truth was long on imagery, emotional appeal, drama, and misinformation. That we are currently in a period of global warning is true. Al Gore's claim that global warming is primarily caused by carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by man, is far from the truth.

In one cartoon Al Gore shows green house gas thugs ganging up on Mr. Sunshine, holding him inside the atmosphere, beating him up, and leaving him here on earth "to rot." This, Gore claims, is the cause of global warming. Nothing is said of solar activity, and the only green house gas on which the movie focuses is carbon dioxide. Almost nothing is said of water vapor, yet solar activity and and water vapor have far greater effects on global warming that does carbon dioxide.

The movie is filled with circumstantial evidence that looks compelling at first, but doesn't hold up under scrutiny. If I hadn't been armed with the information I found ahead of time, I might have believed him. Certainly many people did. Hopefully those who think he's right will look at the links below.

According to junkscience.com, the Kyoto Protocol has already cost over 243 Billion dollars. The return anticipated for this "investment" is a difference of less than three one thousandths of one degree Centigrade by the year 2050. Imagine the good that could be accomplished if that 243 Billion dollars was invested wisely to make the world a better place.

Mike Rosen wrote an article for the Rocky Mountain news in which he points out that all human activity is responsible for only 4.5 percent of the carbon dioxide produced on this planet. He also points out that all the carbon dioxide produced by all sources, is a tiny contributor to global warming, being dwarfed both by water vapor, and the activity of the sun.

I strongly believe we should use our resources, all of our resources, wisely and responsibly. Fluorescent lamps are more efficient than incandescents, and more efficient cars are better than gas guzzling cars, but to claim that we human beings, by virtue of the carbon dioxide we expel, are the cause of global warming, is to divert our attention from things that really can make a difference.

In short, what I took from the movie is this. Al Gore decided long ago that carbon dioxide was the culprit, and having made that decision, he's worked very hard to find circumstantial evidence to convince the world that he is correct.

In the movie he points out, referring to scientists who disagree with him, that when a person's paycheck depends on him not understanding something, it becomes hard for that person to understand it. In the case of Al Gore I contend that he chooses to ignore the solid science that refutes his claims, because to understand and accept that science would require admitting that he's been very wrong for a very long time. That, I believe, is the real inconvenient truth.

Bumblebee is one of many well intentioned people who quote the platitudes Al Gore espouses, and remains blind to the truth about global warming.

by John Gaudio,

I have left Bumblebee's comments unedited, exactly as they were posted.

Bumblebee's quote from Junk Science is valid. In my original post you'll find links to Junk Science supporting my position. Bumblebee provides no supporting links, but does concede the main point, specifically "that <strike>cardon dixoide</strike> [carbon dioxide] might not be the main cause."

Is global warming real? Of course it is, as is global cooling. Both are part of a cycle that has repeated itself over and over, and will continue to repeat. Al Gore took a tiny piece of information, the fact that over the last few years our average temperatures have increased slightly, and, like Chicken Little, Mr. Gore jumped to the conclusion that "the sky is falling." In Mr. Gore's scenario he claims that we are responsible for this natural fluctuation in temperature, and that it must lead us to a disaster. In his attempts to gain power, wealth, and prestige, Mr. Gore has created an entire industry. He asserts a false but urgent need to control our lives in order to prevent his imminent, improbable, and wholly imagined, world wide catastrophe.

Sadly, there are those who believe these lies even though the science, including that found at JunkScience.com, does not support Mr. Gore's claims. So please, do follow Bumblebee's bold advice. Do look it up. Do try to find the source, and don't be fooled [by Al Gore and those who choose to believe him, no matter how well intentioned they appear to be.] :-)

Check the History

Way back when, shortly after life on earth developed a wide array of forms (the Cambrian Explosion), the mean carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere was 4500 ppm. During the Ordivician Period following the Cambrian, the CO2 levels rose as high as 7000 ppm. The mean temperature was 16°C, 2° warmer than it is today. Those levels fell back down to around 4200-4400 ppm about 430 million years ago, and we had an ice age.

Consider! An ice age with the carbon dioxide levels 11 times higher than they are today.

So, the conclusion I would draw from this is that CO2 has very little influence on global temperatures unless it was a substantial constituent of our atmosphere.

Russ,

Thanks for your great comment. Well said. I apologize for missing it earlier. I just came accross it and posted it immediately.

Keep up the good fight!

Al Gore is in the Global Warming (which I think is called "Climate Change" this week) game for two reasons. Money and power. If environmental policies like Cap and Trade pass, he stands to make a substantial amount of money. I don't have a problem with anyone making money, but I do have a problem with them making it through lies and deception. As someone who's studied weather patterns and climate for many years, I see no reason to believe that the weather patterns we've been experiencing are abnormal. A good portion of the planet was much warmer thousands of years ago during a period when there weren't any SUV's, oil companies, and smoke stacks. So even if Global Warming was real, the whole idea that we're the cause of it is laughable at best. Hopefully, once the current cooling trend kicks in, people who realize that Mr. Gore was full of it.

for the Rocky Mountain news in which he points out that all human
activity is responsible for only 4.5 percent of the carbon dioxide

warming, being dwarfed both by water vapor, and the activity of the sun.

you got something wrong. It should be 4.5 percent annually. Read Rosen's article more closely.

I love people who don't take the time to think that we are rapidly burning through fossil fuels, so what if its not a huge contributor to global warming if I sucked on a smoke stack or a tail pipe for even a few minutes I would be dead. And yes it is about 4.5% annually and no we do produce more co2 than the ocean are you kidding me, the ocean absorbs co2. At any rate there is no point in arguing the facts because there are very little things that we actually know, how to ride a bike, drive a car, speak, vocabulary, when something hurts, most things we either take a books word for it the internet or someone else's. One thing I do know is that it's not good for me so it's not good for the environment why because I' am part of it. So who cares lets fix it.
